End of Dec Holidays~

Dear all,

I hope everyone is having a fulfilling holiday! I am sorry that I was not able to update the blog over the past month as I spent part of my time overseas and did not have stable connection. Happy belated birthday to our December babies, Jing Cong, Zachary, Shannon, Ying Fei, Jayden and Audryn!

School will start on the 2nd Jan 2014. Bear in mind that the first week of the school is always HIPS HURRAY, when class rules and routines will be set and class bonding will be done, so you do not have to bring your books yet.

As the year 2013 comes to an end, do start to set your targets for 2014 and plan for the important year ahead!

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Reflect, Appreciate and be Thankful

Dear children,

The school year has come to an end and it is important that we take a step back now and do a little reflection. What have you done well this year? What do you need to improve next year?

A key to always being happy and positive is to appreciate and be thankful for what you receive. Some of you may take for granted the many opportunities given to your class by the school, and that should not be the case.

So, as mentioned in class, I have done up a digital 'Wall of Thanks' (not tanks), for 5SD6 to pen down and share what they are thankful for this year. Do drop by!

http://padlet.com/wall/5sd6_wall_of_thanks

I will be inviting your class teachers to join us to post on the wall. Parents, you are welcomed to post on it too.

Love,
Miss Chan

Prize-Giving 2013

Dear all,

Last Thursday was truly a proud moment for all of us to see so many of our classmates receive awards and prizes for the core subjects! For the parents who unfortunately, were not able to join us, here is a summary of our achievements!

Our class, 5 Self-Discipline 6, won the HIPS Superclass award for the Primary 5 Level! This award is given to the class which achieved outstanding results in the school character development activities (e.g, the cleanest class, the best-behaved class, most charitable class in the level etc).  Everyone contributed in one way or another. I am truly proud of you all!

Another outstanding achievement is the Model Pupil of the year. Both awardees are from our class, Lin Min and Xue Qing. Excellent! =) Continue to be a good role model to your classmates next year!

Academically, you have all worked hard, and both Mrs Baldwin and myself are so proud to see many of you taking prizes for being the top 3 in the level for core subjects.
English: Wei En and Sarah
Mathematics: Irving and Zachary
Higher Chinese: Karen, Wei En and Lin Min
Chinese (Std): Lin Min
Science: Magdalene, Wei En and Sherman

The good progress award for our class goes to Ashley, who displayed resilience and self-discipline, and worked hard to improve her grades throughout the year.

Lin Min and Carson also received the CCA Awards for both Chinese Speech and Drama Elite and Wei Qi respectively for being outstanding contributors in their CCA.

Alister received the Gold Award in the Annual Mathlympics. Yan Bing, Irving and Alister also received the Gold Award for Singapore & Asean Schools Math Olympiads(SASMO).

Wei En, Levelle and Lin Min received with the HSK Chinese Proficiency Test Distinction Award. Chinese is not an easy language to master, continue to keep your interest in this subject!

The Service Excellence Award for Prefects goes to Lin Min and Sarah, our Deputy Head Prefect and Asst. Head Prefect respectively. They have contributed greatly to the school this year, leading teams of prefects to help out during school events such as the Teachers' Day Celebrations.

This year, Levelle, Samantha, Sarah, Xue Qing, Ryan and Karen have worked hard in championing good character among their peers as members of the Friends of Singa and received the Friends of Singa Bronze award. Well done!

Finally, many of our pupils have done well in the various International Competitions & Assessments for Schools (ICAS):
Distinction in English: Sarah, Wei En, Ryan, Alister and Ying Fei
Distinction in Mathematics: Yan Bing, Alister, Sherman and Kang Yan
Distinction in Science: Carson and Alister
Distinction in Computer Skills: Ryan

After working hard this year, enjoy your holidays and recharge for an exciting year ahead!

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Travel Declaration

Dear all,

This is a gentle reminder to do your travel declaration at MC Online if you have not done so. Even if you are not travelling for the holidays, you are still required to submit a "Not travelling" reply.

Please note that the report books will be returned tomorrow. Thank you for your patience.

Tomorrow is the "Use your hands campaign". Please remember to bring a rag and a pail (for those 7 pupils who volunteered) and I will tell you your duty tomorrow.

Regards,
Miss Chan

A little update and FAQs

Dear all,

Thank you for being so patient with my lack of updates. Now is truly a busy time, with subject banding and results processing. I also appreciate your understanding when I return calls late at night.

I know many parents are concerned over the SA2 results and class allocation. So here are some commonly asked questions and the answers.
==
Is the Mathematics SA2 paper tough?
Comparing it to CA2 paper, I would say it is a little more challenging. That is to be expected, after all it is the last paper of the year, combining more topics for the entire year. There are also more questions which requires spatial-visual skills (due to the topics in term 4), which seems to be an area of weakness for some of the children. So it would be good for them to practise more of such questions over the holidays.

I also noted that the time management skills also need some improvement. We have practised sufficiently so far, each time for the revision paper where the class will sit for a mock test in class within the time limit, and also the 3 examinations since beginning of the year. Overall, I feel that the paper is a manageable one.

Is my child offered Higher Chinese next year?
In the event that he/she is not, Mrs Baldwin or myself would have already called you to clarify and to explain in detail.

For the others, do prepare your child to be ready, as it is indeed challenging to cope with all subjects on top of HCL, and P6 is a more demanding year in preparation for PSLE. I would especially advise those who did not score too well for CL or HCL this year (60 - 70 mark range) to use the holidays to revise your Primary 5 work. Likewise for children who did not do too well for your Mathematics, revise through your Math file this holidays.

Will my child be transferred out of the class?
Please do not worry, we will be promoting up to Primary 6 together as a whole class. As far as I know, there is no transferring in or out of the class. They will be re-banded during Chinese lessons. I am glad as the class has bonded well within this year and I believe they will stay strong in class spirit next year.

Are you following the class up to Primary 6?
Deployment will only be released at the end of the year, so I cannot say for certain. In the event that there is a change in the form teacher, please rest assured that I will communicate closely with him/her even during the course of next year to help him/her understand your child's needs and dynamics of the class.

If there are anymore questions, feel free to drop me an SMS (Sorry I have a high tendency to miss calls as my phone is always on silent) or e-mail me at chan_xiao_yan@moe.edu.sg, and I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

Congratulations on receiving the cleanest class award for the month of October! Keep up the good work and continue to keep our learning environment clean!

Thank you to those who have been taking out their time to maintain the classroom even though you were not instructed to. This is really a strong display of good class spirit and initiative! I'm very proud of you.

Start of SA2 Examinations

Dear all,

We have now completed all the topics required for SA2, and in fact started on revision with a mock exam paper yesterday. By now, most of you are able to manage your time well for Paper 1. Keep it up!

A gentle reminder to all that next week (14 Oct to 18 Oct) there will be no school due to PSLE marking and Hari Raya Haji. Please make good use of the week to revise and prepare yourselves for your end of year exams. I will be returning your Term 4 file and Enrichment file this Friday.

Please revise through ALL Process thinking skills (PTS) from Term 1 to 4. Remember my strategy, re-try the questions you did wrongly on a separate piece of paper and see if you have grasped the concept. You have to write it out and solve it to fully know if you understood. It is also good to re-attempt revision papers and examination papers.

Now that revision period is here, you may find yourself overwhelmed with revision homework. Try to manage your time and stay focused. Do make sure to take care of your health and get sufficient sleep too. Everyone is on task so far, Well Done 5SD6!

Tomorrow is your English Paper 1 and Listening Comprehension. Do your best!

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

Happy Children's Day!

Dear children,

I hope everyone enjoyed themselves yesterday during the celebrations! Especially the skit put up by the P5 teachers~ *sprays mosquito repellent*

Do be reminded that the envelopes for Children's Day Appeal is due on Monday. All of you are very fortunate and received many gifts yesterday from your teachers. Do your part for charity too and pay it forward by sharing your good fortune with other children who are less fortunate. =)

Just contribute what you can within your means. Remember, No Gift Too Small.

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Mathematics Enrichment ON tomorrow

Dear all,

Sorry for the lack of updates recently, Term 4 is quite a hectic term. 2 more days to the end of PSLE! Thank you children for being considerate for the P6s and being so tolerant of our shift in classroom and keeping your noise level low at all times.

Please be reminded that Math Enrichment will still be on tomorrow. We will be having our lessons in the Math Room. We will also be having our final assessment for Social Studies tomorrow using board games as a form of alternative assessment.

==
From my observation, everyone is quite proficient in the use and reading of their protractors. If you require more practice, this is a site you may go to: Measuring Angles
(Click on the small "rotate" circle to turn the protractor)

Remember, only when the question states MEASURE, then you may use the protractor to get your answer. Otherwise you would have to solve the question using the properties we have learnt.
==

We are almost at the end of all our P5 topics and P.T.S skills soon, then we will be ready to do full-scale revision for your SA2. All files are with you, so do start to revise your Term 1-3 concepts (especially PTS skills). Do not wait till the last minute!

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Triangles

Dear children,

Now that we are at the topic of Properties of a Triangle, some of your classmates asked about scalene, obtuse and acute triangles and what they mean. So here is a link where you can find out more if you are interested: http://www.mathsisfun.com/triangle.html . It also covers isosceles and equilateral triangle, which is what we are doing.

Reminders:
- Please remember to label the points and mark your angles in your geometrical construction homework today.
- Pupils who have yet to submit the reply slips for the SA2 acknowledgement, please do so by tomorrow.
- There will be Mathematics Enrichment tomorrow. Please start filing your enrichment worksheets into your yellow enrichment file before I start collecting them for checking soon.

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

Class Booth Success

Dear all,

Thank you all for coming by to support us today at the Carnival! It was a roaring success!

I was impressed by the generosity displayed, many of you contributed your tickets towards our class booth. It really showcases our strong class spirit! Way to go!

Thank you to all the volunteers who worked hard and some even stayed beyond their shift to help. You were all so enthusiastic despite the difficulties we faced due to location and space. =) Also thank you to the others who were not part of the helpers team but still came by to help out at your own free time as well!

You have all displayed our school core values of resilience, charity and sincerity. You have done me proud again. ^^

I know everyone is excited to know how much we have raised, I will announce it once I receive news from the school. What's important is not whether we have raised the most funds, but that we've all contributed to the fund-raising for the school!

Please drink lots of water and have a good rest tomorrow. Have a good September Holidays!

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

Teachers' Day

Dear all,

First of all, thank you for the sincere well wishes and the little gifts of appreciation. I was pleasantly surprised when I entered the classroom. I had a really enjoyable Teachers' day yesterday!

Though weather was not too good in the morning, we had a successful Walkathon after all and returned safely before the rain hits. It was leisurely to walk around the neighbourhood near the school and I think everyone had a relaxing time.

I am really happy that all of you are willing to re-do your Camp performance for me to share your experiences. I love your performance! The singing was soothing and harmonious, and the Gatsby twist was hilarious. =) It was also fun to play games for class bonding!

The concert organised by the Prefect Exco was really well-planned and interesting, I was engaged throughout the concert. =)

Sarah, Lin Min and Hong Kai had really worked hard for the entire Teachers' Day event, please do help them catch up with whatever work they had missed.

Thank you to those who voted me for the award Miss Happy. I wasn't expecting such an award at all. ^^

At the end of the day, the best present you can give me, is to show me and let me know that you have at least learnt something from me this year and developed as a person before you leave for Primary 6 next year (and I'm not just talking about Mathematical concepts here). You do not have to spend a cent. =)

Enjoy your holiday today and I'll see you during the Carnival tomorrow!

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan
