Many Stories, One Singapore

Dear all,

Last Saturday, we attended the NE Show and had a great time! We are really lucky that the weather turned for the better and we get to enjoy the show in a cooling environment. Here are the photos I've taken during the event. Feel free to use the photos for your Social Studies assignment. You may also use this entry to share your experiences with your parents and get their feedback and comments to help you with the assignment. You can also go to http://ndp.org.sg/ for more information.

Waiting for instructions and briefing in the school

I was impressed! Everyone displayed orderly and great teamwork during the distribution of the fun packs!

Finally we reached the Float and settled in our seats.

Due to a light drizzle, the floor was slightly wet, and everyone donned their raincoats.

The packed dinner provided by the school was delicious Nasi Lemak!

While waiting for the show to start, entertainers sang and went through the fun pack contents with the children.

All cameras were ready as the Red Lions parachutes begun their descent from the sky.

This is the first time we have a female Red Lion!

Pretty coloured smoke surprised the audience.

Next we had the dynamic defence display. Not very often that you will get to see a real tank and navy vessels!

By then, the weather had completely cleared up and everyone was in high spirits!

The parade started with an awesome aerial display.

Just as the sky started to turn dark, the show started. I was really intrigued by this performance. It takes coordination and teamwork for the performers to change colours to form a picture (by wearing or opening their cloak, or turning around)

As the night falls, a beautiful sea of lights appears.

Play Ball!

Highlight of the show - Fireworks!

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

Reminders

Dear parents,

Today you will receive a letter regarding the P5 camp on the 26th to 28th August. Do not worry about the packing list as there will be a briefing on 14 Aug and a vendor will be coming down in Aug too. In the event that you do not wish for your child to attend the camp, you will have to give me a letter and I will give you a call. Do note that even if you choose to opt out of the camp, your child will still have to attend school for that 3 days.

Dear children,

Please remember to bring along your envelope and the money for ordering the class photos tomorrow (30 July Tuesday) or 31st July Wednesday. The vendor will be in the canteen.

Regards,
Miss Chan

Roles of the Government

Dear Children,

For today's lesson, you will be doing a simple research in groups followed by class presentation.

First, log in to your MC Online account.

Group leaders, please create and share a google doc/presentation with your group mates and myself (chan_xiao_yan@hips.edu.sg)

Your Task:
Find out the role of the Cabinet Minister assigned to your group. In your document/presentation, make sure that you have the following:
1) A Photo of the Minister
2) Name of the Minister
3) Position of the Minister
4) List 2 of his Responsibilities
Tip: Research by looking up what that particular Ministry is in charge of. For example, when researching on Minister of Defense, look up Ministry of Defence.

You have 15 minutes to finish your presentation document/slides. This presentation will replace page 4 of your social studies workbook exercise.

NE Show

Dear parents,
On Saturday, please note that you will have to pick up the children from Gate B as Gate A will be locked. The children are not allowed to go home alone as it is quite late at night when they are dismissed, so please arrange for an adult to pick them up. I will get the children to give you a call when we are on our way back from the show.

As the road along Gate A is very narrow and the buses have to enter through that road, please do not park along the road at Gate A.

Dear children,
I think everyone is excited about this Saturday, do remember to come in your camp t-shirts!

Here are some reminders that I've already went through with you before:

1) Bring a ziplock bag to keep your electronic valuables such as cameras and handphones in case of rain.

2) If you have a better raincoat, bring it along. Do not bother bringing an umbrella.

3) The funpack will be distributed to you before we leave the school, hence there is no need to bring too big a bag. Just a small bag to keep your thermometer, water bottle and other small items will do.

4) There is no need to bring too much money as snacks and drinks will be provided in your fun pack. I also do not want to see anyone picking on their food and wasting the dinner provided by the school.

5) Take care of your own belongings and follow instructions clearly. Do not stray away from the class and be on your best behaviour.

This is my favourite part of the show from 2012. I wonder what is in store for us this year?

Yours truly,
Miss Chan

Do you know?

Dear children,

When I do discussions with my Primary 3 Science class from time to time, they will surface interesting questions that they may have related to the current topic, and I thought I may as well just share the fun facts here with all of you too. =)

We always see duckweed in our school garden pond, have you ever wondered much about these tiny beings?

Duckweed is a plant with roots but no stem. What many do not know, is that duckweed is actually a flowering plant. The smallest duckweed flower known in the world is very small, measuring only 0.3 mm! (1cm is 10mm)

That being said, the duckweed's flower does not contribute to the reproduction process of the duckweed. Duckweed actually reproduce asexually. For those who are interested, you may find out more about how a duckweed reproduce here: http://www.ehow.com/how-does_5262856_duckweed-reproduce.html

Racial Harmony Day

Dear all,

Every year on the 21st July, we commemorate Racial Harmony Day. From our Social Studies lessons, you have learnt about the Maria Hertogh racial riots in the past and how it impacts the people negatively. Hence we must not take our current peace for granted. Always be sensitive to the differences and respect others.

On Wednesday, we had many presentations done by the Primary 4 pupils during assembly and if you paid attention, you would have learnt a lot more about the cultures and traditions of different races in Singapore. We also discussed more about the Muslim cultures in class, I hope next time you all will be more aware of what Halal food actually means.

During recess, stores also sold traditional dishes different from the usual canteen fare such as Rojak, Muah Chee, Nasi Briyani. I personally thought that the carrot cake was very delicious!

Here are some of our classmates who dressed up for the occasion! It is nice to see you all join in to liven up the celebrations even though it was quite warm in the long-sleeved costumes.

I would also like to thank the parents of Chloe, Dylan, Joni, Nicholas and Ethan who took out their precious time and came down to school to help with the selling of the Kachang Puteh and biscuits. This stall is always a highlight for the pupils every year and what's more, this year the proceeds will go towards helping to raise funds for the school upgrading project. Thank you for your support to the school and our children! =)

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Enrichment

Please be reminded that there will be a swap in the Enrichment days next week, so I will be seeing you tomorrow (Monday) for Math Enrichment till 3pm. Mrs Baldwin will see you on Tuesday for English/Science Enrichment till 3.30pm.

P3 Practical Test

Dear children,

I am really appreciative and thankful for the help that you have given to the teachers and juniors during the P3 Math & Science Practical Test today. It was more challenging as the pupils are young, and this is their first time attempting the test but you all did your duties well and the whole event went smoothly. We even finished ahead of time as you were very quick with the setting and packing up. For those who are unable to join us due to your Chinese Supplementary classes, thank you for helping out in the hall before your lesson.

I am extremely proud, this is really a whole class effort. You have all displayed the school core value of sincerity, well done!

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

In giving, We receive

Dear all,

Parents, I thank you for the kind understanding and support in allowing your children to help out with the Primary 3 Math and Science Practical this Thursday. It will be a great way for them to learn responsibility and how to lead others.

Just like how the Primary 6 pupils took out their precious time despite their incoming prelims to help us during the Primary 5 Practical Test; now we have the chance to pay it forward by helping the Primary 3. Remember our school theme last year, In Giving, We Receive.

Children, please reflect on what I've shared with you in class on the value of gratitude. Always be thankful for the opportunities and experiences provided by the school or even help given to you by others.  Do not take what you receive for granted.

You can always show your gratitude through simple acts such as supporting school events with a positive attitude. As a student of the school, be proud to do your part for the school!

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Motivational Monday - Take care of our planet!

Dear children,

It has come to my attention that our newspaper collecting this term is starting off really slowly compared to term 2. Remember why are we collecting the newspapers? It is to send for recycling, to reduce the amount that we waste! Your future depends on the state of the planet, we can all do our tiny part to help.

Come on, let's work hard together! Remind one another to bring along old newspapers and stack them neatly at the back of the classroom!

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

Visitors to the school

Dear all,

Here are some updates of what happened in the school over the past 2 weeks since term re-opened:

Senior Minister of State School Visit

On the very first day of Term 3, Miss Indranee Rajah visited our school and interacted with our children and joined us for lessons. We had the honor of having her in our English lesson with Mrs Baldwin in the Library.

She also had an experience of our school's kuai ban lesson with Sarah sharing with her the techniques.

Some of our children had an opportunity to have a dialogue session with her. From our class, we have Xue Qing and Levelle!

(Source of photos: Miss Indranee Rajah's Facebook page)

Visitors from Shanghai Shen Jia Men Primary School

Just last Tuesday, on the 9 July, our school hosted a China school and we had china pupils joining us for lessons! A big thank you to all the 9 buddies who took care and translated for the 9 pupils! (Unfortunately I was unable to take a photo of all the buddies with their China friends.)

A teacher from their school also conducted a lesson for our class, teaching the children about knots. It was really interesting wasn't it? I can see that you all enjoyed the lesson!

Some of you did really pretty knots! For the rest of you, keep trying and practising. =)

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan
