Hello again

Dear all,

Sorry for the lack of updates lately as I was feeling unwell.  Hence here is a long post to keep up with the happenings lately.

==
P5 Camp

Welcome back from the camp! I am truly sorry and disappointed that I was unable to join you all, but I am glad that everyone had fun. It was a pity about your kayaking, but your safety comes first. Don't be too disappointed!

Here is the only photo I have of your performance, sent to me by the other camp teachers, who gave me positive feedback about your teamwork! Well done, I am so proud =)

Mrs Baldwin also shared with me how many of your overcame your fears and challenged yourselves during the activities. I'm sure the camp is one experience you will remember for a long time to come (I still remember my own P5 camp fondly!)

I shall try to see if I am able to get photos from the other teachers to share your experiences of camp with your parents on the blog.

Mathematics CA2

Thank you all for being so cooperative and understanding the past 2 days when I barely have my voice, hence we are still able to have lessons and check through the papers with minimal disruptions. I really appreciate that =)

As mentioned, you have all done pretty well for your Paper 1. Keep it up! I will release your Paper 2 on Monday. Let's bear in mind a few important learning points from this CA2:

1) In answering, fractions should not have decimals in it. Hence, multiply both numerator and denominator by the same number such that the decimal is removed. Then, remember to simplify the fraction.

2) When questions require drawing (Symmetry, Tessellation etc), it is best to do it in pencil. In case you make a mistake, you can easily amend it. More importantly, you should always use a ruler. Freehand drawings will be immediately marked wrong.

3) Graph question: when asked to do drawing of graphs, always draw a dotted line to match the value at the axis of the graph. This is the best way to ensure that you are accurate.

You have all done well by being very consistent with your units and final statements. Keep up the good habit!

Mid Autumn Carnival

Thank you for volunteering to help out at the school Carnival. Almost everyone in our class is involved! I am impressed with your display of our school core value - Sincerity. I'm sure we will all have a lot of fun while doing our part for the school.

Please do continue to support by buying more tickets, the lucky draw prizes are really attractive this year (Cameras, Tablet, hampers etc) Moreover, all food, games and purchases during the Carnival can only be paid for using the coupons from the tickets. There are many stalls selling quality goods at good value, and even cheap branded bags and clothes! Parents may want to look out for those stalls on the day of the Carnival! If you wish to buy more tickets, you may do so through me or going to the general office.

We reached our target of selling all our 42 x $20 tickets! =) To do my part for the school as well, everyone in the class will be receiving a $2 coupon from me as a reward for being so supportive. Do spend it on anything that you like during the carnival!

In the event that you are unable to attend the carnival, you may pass the $2 coupon to your friends to spend at the Carnival, or donate it towards our class booth funds.

Have a good rest this weekend!

Camp Matters

Dear all,

By now, you should be done packing for your camp. Excited? =)

Do remember to come in your PE t-shirt tomorrow and leave your handphones at home. (In the event that you do bring your mobile phone, it will be locked in the general office. So please do not bring them.)

Dear parents, although you have my mobile number, if there is any reason that you need to contact your child, please call the camp number that is given to your child during the briefing. I will not be bringing my phone around with me and also the reception there is poor, so I will not be able to respond to you. I seek your kind understanding.

Yours truly,
Miss Chan

King of Ddakji

Dear children,

Thank you to those of you who responded. I've tried out the game myself and it's really not easy to flip!

Here is another video which teaches you clearly how to make the toy and play it. Do try it out!

I will be needing 12 helpers for our stall, 6 helpers per shift, so that you can also have half the time to explore and play at the carnival. Do check with your parents if you will be attending the carnival and if you are fine with volunteering your help at the class booth. I will get your response on Thursday. We will also try out the game on Thursday. Look forward to it!

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

5SD6 Mid Autumn Game Booth

Dear children,

Although we have originally finalised the game booth idea, there was feedback that the game might be too simple and may not attract enough visitors among the many game stalls during the carnival (Our target is $150 for that day).

Therefore, I've looked through the original game proposals submitted by your class again and selected a different game that was proposed by your classmates. This idea was submitted by Wan Cheng's group. Ddakji is a traditional Korean children's game and was featured on many popular variety shows, such as Running Man, and hopefully that will be an interesting factor to draw visitors to our stall.

As a class, we will probably have to work together to make quite a few of the toys for the actual game day. We will also have trial play of the game in class where everyone will make their own Ddakji and we shall see who is the King/Queen of Ddakji in 5SD6.

You may refer to the link below for more details:
How to make your own Ddakji

I apologise that I am unable to do a proper final consult with the class as I will have to submit the final idea by this Sunday. Hence I will need your consensus through the class blog. Please post your response in the padlet link below to state if you are OK with the change in game or if you have any strong objections/better suggestions. You may also state if you prefer the original bottle cap game.

Do pass the message around to your other classmates to check the blog and submit their response!

Thank you,
Miss Chan

Social Studies Research

Dear children,

==

For this lesson, I would like you to find out more about our Minister Mentor Mr Lee Kuan Yew. This individual assignment will take up 15% of your SA2 grade.

Your assignment:
Using print or non-print materials, find out more about Lee Kuan Yew and write down your responses to the following:
1) List 3 qualities of Lee Kuan Yew (Support with examples and state your sources) - 2 marks each
2) List 2 pieces of interesting information about Lee Kuan Yew (State your sources) - 3 marks each
3) List 1 thing that you admire about Lee Yuan Kew (Personal response) - 3 marks

Use google doc to type your assignment so that it will be saved. You are not expected to complete it today, but just to start off with your research and brainstorm as much as you can.

To help you get started, go to this link http://lee-kuan-yew.com/ and read through some of the articles.

If you are done with your research early, please go to MC Online to complete your HBL assignments if you have not already done so. Those of you who failed any of the assignments, you are required to re-do them as well.

You are not allowed to surf any other sites other than the class blog or MC Online learning videos (not games). You may want to watch the tutorial on Angles, which will be our next topic.

Camp Matters - Packing

Dear all,

Please be reminded that the vendor will be in school tomorrow and Friday to sell the camp items in the canteen.

A few things to note:
- Plate, mug, fork and spoon that you are bringing must be non-disposable. You will have to wash and re-use the plates for your next meal every time. I would encourage you to bring plastic plates instead of ceramic as it would be lighter and less likely to be broken.

- It is not compulsory to pack earplugs as we will be providing you with earplugs at the camp.

- Do not wear your camp t-shirt on the first day (Pack it for the campfire). Come to school in your PE shirt.

- Track pants/Long pants are necessary for the activities. Please pack at least 2. In the worst case that you are unable to find long pants, 3/4 pants will have to do.

- You may want to pack an older pair of shoes for the water activity as your shoes will get completely wet.

- Do not bring handphones, electronics, tibits, jewellery or other valuable items/clothing.

I hope this helps with your packing.

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Preparation for Mathematics Examination

Dear children,

Please remember to bring your calculator and mathematical set (Protractor, Set-squares) tomorrow for your examination. Have an early night today to ensure that you are alert tomorrow.

You can play during recess, but please do not over-exert yourself . Your Paper 2 is right after recess and you need to stay focused. I will see you in the canteen during the last 10 minutes of your recess. Use that time to wash up, cool off and clear your mind to prepare for a long paper ahead.

Take care of your health meanwhile and all the best!

Do bring back your Term 3 Mathematics file, filed completely with parents' signature and leave it in the class cupboard for my checking. Thank you.

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Microsoft Excel Workshop

Dear all,

Currently I have received the reply slip for 25 pupils who will be attending the Excel workshop conducted by the school. What about the rest of the class? I would highly encourage you to attend the workshop as it is subsided by the school and you only have to pay $5 instead of the original $10 course fee.

Everyone in the class is very familiar with Microsoft word and Microsoft PowerPoint by now. On top of those skills that you already have, knowing how to use the Microsoft Excel software will be useful in a long run too.

You can make use of Excel to help you with data entry and processing (meaning to find total, average, etc) or even use it to create graphs, charts and tables. During the course, the concept of Average will also be brought in for application.

Do submit your reply slip on Monday and I hope everyone will try their best to attend the course if you are available.

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

Home Based Learning

Dear Children,

Today is the 2nd day of the PSLE Oral examination, please be reminded to start on your Home Based Learning assignments on MC Online Portal if you have not already done so. Currently, only 64% of the Mathematics assignments are completed.

Do make good use of this long weekend to revise for your CA2 examinations. Remember to also revise your Term 1 and Term 2 topics and PTS skills. The best way to know if you have grasped the concept is to cover the corrections and retry the questions that you have done wrongly the first time. If you are able to achieve the correct answer this time around, that means you have understood the concept better. If it is still wrong, refer to the corrections and try to understand what went wrong. However, if you are still confused, please seek help from someone at home or you may also approach me on Monday and I will explain to you.

Work hard and always give your best!

Yours Truly,
Miss Chan

SS Project - NE Reflection

Dear children,

Please be reminded that today is the deadline for your project. For those of you who e-mailed or shared via google doc with me, I would have replied with an e-mail to acknowledge that I have received it. Thank you for the hard work, I am quite pleased with some of the presentations so far.

Note that Mathematics Enrichment will still be on tomorrow. I will be going through the CA2 Enrichment questions.

For the month of August, there will not be any Broadbased Programme on Wednesdays.

Regards,
Miss Chan

School National Day Celebrations

Dear all,

How did you spend your National Day yesterday?

Although it rained on Wednesday halfway through our celebrations, it was still a fun-filled day!

Our classmates Ying Fei and Samantha from the Brownies and Regine and Shihui from Red Cross are part of the flag bearers who led the parade in the morning.
(Sorry, I do not have a photo of the parade currently, shall upload it later.)

Many of our classmates volunteered to help out with the Junior Games Day. I was really heartened to see that some of you really ran along with them and cheering them on. That was excellent! I'm sure the lower primary children really had a lot of fun thanks to your efforts.

Back in the hall, the rest of the class competed against other P5 classes playing traditional games such as pick-up sticks and five stones.

Due to the rain, we had to end our activities pre-maturely. We ended the day singing National Day songs in the hall. Everyone came in red-coloured attire, great class spirit!

Yours Sincerely,
Miss Chan

Chinese Language Fortnight

Dear all,

To create a more conducive environment for learning and using of the Chinese Language, our school organised “Mother Tongue Fortnight” from 22 July to 2 August 2013. We had both our own pupils and even external organisations to put up Chinese performances and our class was also involved through the following:

Interclass Chinese Recital Competition

Our class is one of the 3 classes who went through the preliminary round to perform during assembly. Though we did not emerge the Champion in the end, it was still great effort. Well done!

Chinatown Heritage Centre Learning Journey

The learning journey to Chinatown on Friday was led by our very own classmates Zachary, Regine, Paul and Jane. They did an excellent job of leading and explaining the various parts of the Museum! Here are some photos to share our experience.

Miss Chan
